There was an old woman, a sort of medicine woman, who lived out in the AZ desert when I was a child. The memory of the woman surfaced for some reason and I remembered her tales of spirits, of things that go bump in the night, of evil that roams in the darkness of night. She herself was rather frightening in appearance but her tales were entertaining and used to scare me to no end. The memory of the old woman inspired this painting.
